Brownlee Brothers Launch National Campaign to Build School Health Legacy

Team GB triathletes, Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, enjoyed a shopping trip and culinary masterclass with Aldi at a primary school as part of a new campaign to promote healthy eating in schools.

  The Kit for Schools campaign is part of Aldi and Team GB’s long-standing efforts to get young people active and eating well ahead of Tokyo 2020. They have also collaborated on the Get Set to Eat Fresh initiative, which teaches young people about eating well and gives them the skills and confidence to cook fresh, healthy meals.  

The Olympic medal winners visited an Aldi store with pupils from Ravenstone Primary School in Balham, to choose fresh, nutritious ingredients to make healthy snacks.

The Brownlee brothers returned to the school and joined the children in putting their culinary skills to the test, helping them to create their favourite healthy snack, fruit kebabs. The athletes also passed on words of advice to budding athletes, explaining that enjoying a healthy diet has been one of the secrets to their success. 

The visit took place to launch Aldi’s new Kit for Schools campaign, which will see the supermarket donate £20,000 to twenty schools across the UK to invest in new equipment to create a healthy legacy ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. Over 23,000 primary schools will have received two wallchart posters containing healthy activity ideas to fill out with exclusive Team GB stickers of 60 Olympians. 

Aldi shoppers will receive stickers every time they spend £30 or more in store up until 3rd November, which can be taken into a local school and added to their sticker poster. For every chart the school fills, they will gain one entry into the final prize draw to win £20,000 for a healthy legacy.

We had a great time launching the new Aldi’s Kit for Schools campaign. It was fantastic to see the children so engaged and enthusiastic about being healthy and active. They showed a real understanding for the importance of fresh food and they all put us to shame with their amazing fruit kebabs. 

The Kit for Schools campaign is a great way to help young people overcome the barriers they might face getting involved in sport by not having the correct equipment. We hope it will inspire more children to get active in the run-up to Tokyo and, who knows, it may even help to unearth the next generation of Olympic athletes.”

About Aldi’s Kit for Schools 

Aldi’s Kit for Schools is an initiative for all primary schools across the UK, which launches in September. Shoppers who spend more than £30 at Aldi between Friday 6 September and Sunday 3 November, in one transaction, will receive Team GB stickers. Schools that collect 300 stickers per poster can send the completed poster back in a pre-paid envelope for the chance receive an exclusive school’s sports kit and to be entered into a prize draw to win £20,000 to spend on creating a healthy legacy for the school. 

Aldi’s Kit for Schools aims to spark new healthy campaigns in schools across the country. Each poster contains 150 healthy challenges, short ideas for use in assembly or the classroom, to help inspire your pupils to eat well, discover new healthy foods and get active. Together with Get Set to Eat Fresh’s new Get Stuck In resources, they can be used to build on participation with Aldi’s Kit for Schools to inspire and sustain new healthy moments throughout the school community. 

Taking part 

Collect, explore and win with Aldi's Kit for Schools 

1. Collect. All eligible schools have been posted an entry pack, addressed to the head, or the teacher who pre-ordered your pack. Check your school reception to find the pack and ask your school community to pick up their Team GB sticker whenever they spend £30 in any Aldi store.

2. Explore. Use the campaign to boost healthy habits at school and at home. Try out each poster’s challenges and explore our Get Stuck In resources.

3. Win. Complete the poster with 300 Team GB stickers to receive an exclusive school sports kit and the chance to win one of 20 prizes of £20,000 to build a health legacy at your school.

Who can enter?

The promotion is open 6 September 2019 to 3 November 2019 to primary schools in England, Scotland and Wales. Send your completed poster by 18 November 2019 to enter.

About Get Set to Eat Fresh

Get Set to Eat Fresh is the healthy eating education programme from Team GB and Aldi designed to support teachers of 5–14s in developing students’ love and understanding of fresh, healthy food. 

With Get Set to Eat Fresh, teachers can access free, fun and engaging curriculum-linked resources about healthy eating. This education programme is brought to life by Team GB athletes who inspire students about the benefits of healthy eating by providing insight into athlete nutrition and their own eating habits. 

Backed by Aldi’s Athlete Ambassadors, Jonny and Alistair Brownlee, alongside other top Team GB stars such as Taekwondo champion Jade Jones, Lutalo Muhammed, Double Olympic Medallist in Taekwondo, and climber Shauna Coxsey, Get Set to Eat Fresh is set to improve the eating habits of 1.2 million young people in the UK by 2020. To date, the programme has reached over 1.5 million children via programme activity.  

Aldi has extended the initiative to run until Paris 2025, with the hope to inspire even more children to eat well.
